The owner of Skagit River Outfitters in Lake Stevens, Washington, Tom Nelsen grew up fishing the Chinook, coho and steelhead runs of north Puget Sound. Nelson is a fisheries specialist. He earned a degree in fisheries biology from the University of Washington and did extensive work for the school's Fisheries Research Institute on projects ranging from the Nushagak River, Lake Illiamna and Chignik Lake systems on the Alaskan Peninsula.
Nelson's primary fisheries include Skagit River system in northwest Washington, the Snohomish River system, the saltwater fisheries of Marine Areas 8-2 and 9 north of Seattle, and the Columbia River system, but you'll also find him in Sitka, Alaska, Nootka Sound, B.C., Neah Bay, Sekiu, Grays Harbor and the San Juan Islands of Washington.
Nelson operates out of a state-of-the-art 22-foot Alumaweld Super V custom jet sled, serves as the Acting Pilot of the 97-foot "Chief Seattle" fireboat based at Seattle's Pier 53 and is a member of the Seattle Fire Department's Emergency Marine Response Team. Nelson also gives at the Salmon University and Steelhead University and has written Salmon, Trout, Steelheader and Fishing & Hunting News. He's also the co-host of the "Northwest Wild Country Outdoor Radio Network," which broadcasts throughout Washington, Oregon and British Columbia. |
