A legend when it comes to steelhead and walleye fishing in Northern Ohio, Craig Lewis owns Erie Outfitters, the Mecca and informational hub for steelhead anglers targeting all of Lake Erie’s tributaries. From fall through early spring, Lewis can be caught owning steelhead on rivers and streams from Michigan to Upstate NY. He focuses mostly on Lake Erie tributaries and considers the Grand River and Vermilion River as his home waters, although it’s not uncommon to catch him one many of the Lake Ontario tributaries, including Oak Orchard and 18 Mile Creek. During salmon season he’ll venture north and cast into several Lake Michigan tributaries, including the Betsie and Manistee River, as well as the St. Marys River in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.
Lewis fell in love with Steelhead in Ohio in 1986. More than two decades ago he started a fly company with his wife and shortly after was tying flies almost full time for 29 shops in the region. Determined to make fishing his career, he opened Erie Outfitters in the middle of famous Steelhead Alley. Erie Outfitters continues to dominate the steelhead scene year after year.
Lewis has also been a fixture in the center pin world. He’s spent countless hours designing these rods in addition to working with reel makers Arnold Kingpin and John Milner on advancing technology for quality reels that match these rods. Running pin trips as well as specializing in them at Erie Outfitters for the past decade has enabled Lewis to stamp his worth into the Great Lakes when it comes to fishing.
Lewis is well known through the Great Lakes and is heavily involved with the Central Basin Steelheaders. His status has led to filming and writing articles for In-Fisherman, IGFA magazine, Great Lakes Angler, Sportstime Ohio and others. He’s been featured in several fishing related books and has appeared on Outdoor Ohio, Ohio Sportsman and In Fisherman TV.
